Grounds

We at St. Aidan’s Church are so very fortunate to have extensive park like grounds. At a rough guess I’d say about four acres, although of course, some of that area is taken up with the church building, the parish hall, the Office/Sunday School building, and the inevitable parking lot. The rest is garden; at least that is my vision.
I suppose I could be called the groundskeeper, the grounds keep me -- busy. Having grown up in England I have gardening in my blood and am so very thankful I came to St. Aidan’s and found a way of ministering for the Lord via my love of growing things.

Josefa May Memorial Garden.

So much area laid out in grass, trees, shrubs and flowers obviously calls for a lot of maintenance. Willing volunteers among the congregation give their time and labor being weed pullers, grass cutters and rock pickers.

Rocks, there are tons of them. Our soil really consists of pebbles up to boulders all cemented tightly in clay. So, we dig them up and make use of them to edge pathways and form drainage places, and so on. I’m told that we can thank the Missoula floods for them.

An interment memorial garden was established in 1972 following the death of Josefa May Rees, wife of Fr. Bill Rees who was assistant rector at that time. Josefa’s ashes were placed there and in the ensuing years the cremains of some much beloved and missed parishioners have been interred in the garden, which is lovingly cared for.

We continue to have an annual vegetable garden. The Youth Group helped build raised beds. The garden continues to supply tomatoes, squash, cucumbers and beans fir donation to Snow-CAP (a community action program providing food and clothing to the needy in East Multnomah County.)

It is so rewarding to see sections that were once just weed patches develop into colorful flower beds. Of course, there is a tremendous lot still to be tackled,

but with continuing efforts we should get closer and closer to meeting our goals. Even as we look ahead we can also look back with pride at what we have accomplished to the glory of the Lord.
