Our season of preparation is still with us but is drawing to a close.
Someone once asked me if it was alright for us to be decorating the Christmas tree, buying gifts and wrapping them, baking Christmas cookies, and attending Christmas events during Advent.
The answer is a resounding “yes!”
Advent is all about preparation and making “the way straight” for the coming of Our Lord. But we do not embrace these activities frivolously and without thought. As we entered Advent, we began to question ourselves and the particular situations in our lives, by asking ourselves which areas of darkness in our lives we needed to leave behind us as we began our personal and communal spiritual journey toward the humility and grace of God’s new-born hope in the world. Then we became seriously reflective as we let go of our resentments, our judgments, preparing ourselves to come to the birthplace of Christ. We prepared to come with open hearts and with willingness to change our sinful ways. We heeded the words of the prophets and saints to come with reconciliation and forgiveness and prayer, resolved to rebuild anew all that we have seen torn down, to prepare ourselves to leave the darkness behind and step into the light of Christ’s mercy and grace.
Fourth Advent heightens all this awareness and asks the question, “Are you ready?”
Are we ready to receive Christ at Christmas?
We have just a little time left to be sure we are prepared. The tree has entered the house, the gifts are being wrapped, the food is being cooked, the plans are being made, the smiles of joy are creeping into our consciousness. Now is the time to look around your life and your heart to be sure all is being prepared there as well so that you might enter into this last week of Advent with extravagant expectation and joy.
For the journey,
And so we prepare…!
It’s time for the Greening of the Church!
On Sunday, December 18th, we will be Greening the Church at 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. following the Holy Cross Service. We are hoping to see many hands and hearts from both our congregations to
help with this joyful labor.
Please plan to come back to church after a little lunch or refreshment to assist in decorating our sweet sanctuary and to feel the movement of the Spirit for Christmas!
Advent Artists’ Talk!
O come, O come, Emmanuel!
Following our service on Sunday, we will bring the lovely artwork offered by parishioner artists to the parish hall during coffee hour. The artists will each give a brief talk about their work and we will have the opportunity to show them our appreciation.
Our Giving Tree offers us an opportunity to think of others before ourselves. Please take time to choose a gift request from some of the good people who rely on our participation with them to bring a little comfort and joy into the hearts of the homeless, the hungry and the marginalized. We ask that you leave a tree ornament in place of the tag you take and bring back your
